Former presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has voiced his support for Raye, a Nigerian National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, who gained national attention after posting a video criticizing government policies. Atiku described Raye as a symbol of a new generation of politically engaged women advocating for democratic participation and truth in the political arena.
“Raye embodies the spirit of a new generation of women who champion the ideals of popular participation and unwavering advocacy in the political sphere,” Atiku said in a statement. He expressed admiration for her courage and resilience, particularly her boldness in speaking out against government leadership. “I deeply admire her boldness and wisdom—her fearless resolve to speak truth to power, undeterred by the weight of opposition,” he added.
Drawing comparisons to some of Nigeria’s most influential female political figures, such as Gambo Sawaba, Funmilayo Ransom-Kuti, and Margaret Ekpo, Atiku highlighted the important role women have historically played in the country’s political landscape. He urged that Raye, like these iconic figures, should be supported and celebrated for her advocacy rather than being met with hostility.
Atiku stressed the need for solidarity towards Raye, who is currently serving as a corps member in Lagos. “Rather than being met with hostility, Raye deserves encouragement and support. She is a shining emblem of the Nigerian youth—a testament to the long-held promise that the leaders of tomorrow are already among us, ready to shape a better future,” he said.
The controversy surrounding Raye erupted after she posted a video on her TikTok account (@talktoraye), in which she criticized the economic conditions in Nigeria and expressed dissatisfaction with President Bola Tinubu’s leadership. Raye lamented that hard work no longer guarantees financial stability and called the president a “terrible leader” for failing to address the struggles of ordinary Nigerians.
