President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Daniel Bwala as the Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications to the President, a significant development that signals a new direction in his administration’s communication strategy. Bwala, who was previously an aide to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, now assumes a key position in the State House, tasked with managing the media and public relations for the president.
The announcement of Bwala’s appointment was made on Thursday by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. According to Onanuga, Bwala’s new role will involve handling the media affairs of the presidency, shaping public opinion, and ensuring effective communication between the president and the Nigerian populace. His extensive background in law and public affairs is expected to bring a wealth of experience to the position.
Daniel Bwala, a lawyer by profession, is a familiar figure in Nigeria’s political and media circles. Before his appointment, he was widely recognized for his role as a media strategist and public affairs analyst, particularly during the 2023 election cycle when he worked closely with Atiku Abubakar’s campaign. Bwala’s experience in managing political narratives and handling sensitive communications will be an asset in the high-stakes environment of the presidency.
In addition to Bwala’s appointment, three other Nigerians were also appointed to key leadership roles in various government agencies. These appointments, announced alongside Bwala’s, are expected to bring further expertise to the administration’s operations. Olawale Olopade was named the new Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), while Dr. Abisoye Fagade was appointed the Director-General of the National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR). Dr. Adebowale Adedokun will now head the Bureau of Public Procurement.
Olawale Olopade, who takes over as the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, is a seasoned sports administrator with a rich background in the sector. He previously served as the Commissioner of Youth and Sports in Ogun State and was instrumental in organizing the 2024 National Sports Festival as the chairman of the Local Organizing Committee. His appointment is seen as a strategic move to revitalize the country’s sports industry and improve its international standing.
Dr. Abisoye Fagade, appointed the Director-General of NIHOTOUR, brings to the role extensive experience in marketing communications. He is the founder and managing director of Sodium Brand Solutions, a leading brand management company in Nigeria. Fagade’s expertise in branding and communications is expected to play a crucial role in positioning Nigeria as a key player in the global hospitality and tourism industry.
Meanwhile, Dr. Adebowale Adedokun, the new Director-General of the Bureau of Public Procurement, has a strong background in research, training, and strategic planning. Prior to his appointment, Adedokun was the Director of Research, Training, and Strategic Planning at the Bureau, where he was involved in key procurement reforms and initiatives. His promotion is seen as a testament to his competence and commitment to enhancing transparency in public procurement.
Speaking about the new appointments, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of dedication, patriotism, and excellence in public service. He urged the appointees to bring their expertise to bear in their respective roles and to contribute to the development of the country. “I urge the newly appointed officers to discharge their duties with dedication and excellence,” Tinubu said in his address.
The appointments of Bwala and the other directors-general come at a crucial time for President Tinubu’s administration as it seeks to strengthen its communication channels and improve efficiency in key government agencies. Bwala’s expertise in media relations is expected to be particularly valuable as the administration works to address various political and economic challenges facing the country.
Bwala’s appointment is also seen as a significant step in bridging the divide between the two major political parties in Nigeria. His shift from the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to President Tinubu’s government signals a potential for greater political collaboration and reconciliation.
