Funke Akindele Appointed UNAIDS National Goodwill Ambassador for Nigeria

The United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) has appointed renowned Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Funke Akindele, as its National Goodwill Ambassador (GWA) for Nigeria. The announcement, which took place during the World AIDS Day commemoration on December 3, 2024, in Abuja, was made by the United Nations Resident Coordinator for Nigeria, Mr. Mohammed M. Malick Fall.

The prestigious appointment recognizes Akindele’s longstanding commitment to raising awareness about HIV, as well as her efforts to combat stigma and discrimination associated with the virus. In her new role as National Goodwill Ambassador, Akindele will focus on advocating for the elimination of vertical HIV transmission, promoting prevention strategies, and ensuring equitable access to HIV treatment.

Funke Akindele, a multiple award-winning actress and producer, is no stranger to social advocacy. She initially gained prominence for her role in the UNFPA-sponsored television series *I Need to Know*, which aimed to educate youth about reproductive health and HIV awareness. Her impactful role in the series helped bring HIV awareness to a wide audience, marking the beginning of her long-standing commitment to public health issues.

Known as the “Queen of Box Office” in Nollywood, Akindele has spent over two decades using her influence to promote social causes, from women’s empowerment to public health. Her ability to use her platform for social good has made her a respected figure not only in the entertainment industry but also in the realm of public health advocacy.

Nigeria has made notable progress in its fight against HIV, with a 42.3% decrease in new infections from 2010 to 2023. Currently, 1.6 million of the 2 million Nigerians living with HIV are receiving treatment. Despite this progress, significant challenges remain, including the persistence of stigma and unequal access to healthcare services, particularly in rural areas.

Dr. Leopold Zekeng, UNAIDS Country Director for Nigeria, praised Akindele’s appointment, calling her a “key ally in supporting people living with HIV and advancing Nigeria’s AIDS response.” He emphasized that Akindele’s influence will help further the fight against HIV and accelerate the country’s efforts to meet global health targets.
