Nollywood filmmaker and actress Funke Akindele, popularly known for her role as “Jenifa,” recently stirred online discussions with her thoughts on feminism and gender respect. A clip of her speaking on these issues quickly went viral, leading to widespread attention and debate. Akindele, who is also a successful realtor, shared her views on feminism, gender equality, and the importance of mutual respect between men and women.
In the viral clip, Funke Akindele openly declared herself a feminist, stating, “I am a feminist,” and reinforcing her belief in the empowerment of women. However, she made it clear that her understanding of feminism does not support a woman disrespecting her husband. “I am a feminist, but I don’t support a woman disrespecting her husband,” she emphasized, showcasing her balanced approach to the concept of feminism.
Akidnle continued by rejecting the traditional and outdated notion that a woman’s place is solely in the kitchen. “I strongly reject the idea that a woman’s place is in the kitchen,” she remarked. According to the actress, women are just as capable as men and should not be confined to limiting roles. She further asserted that women can achieve anything they set their minds to, reinforcing her belief in female empowerment.
However, Funke Akindele cautioned that while women should embrace feminism, it should not be used as an excuse for disrespecting their husbands. She stressed that, as part of the feminist movement, women must also “do what is right” in their relationships. “Feminism is about equality, not disrespect,” she clarified, advocating for a healthy balance where both genders treat each other with respect.
The actress also addressed the topic of gender disparity, expressing her firm belief that women are not inferior to men. “I don’t believe that women are lesser or weaker than men,” she said. Akindele’s statement challenged the societal norms that often place women in a subordinate role, emphasizing that both genders are equally capable and deserving of respect.
Funke Akindele then turned her focus to the treatment of women by men. She emphasized that men should treat women with special respect, rejecting the idea that women should be treated as lesser beings. “Men are supposed to treat women special, not less,” she declared, advocating for a change in societal attitudes towards gender roles and relationships.
The clip also featured Kamo State, a fellow Nollywood personality, who appeared to support Akindele’s views. Throughout the discussion, Kamo could be heard enthusiastically backing her points, even saying, “I hate men.” However, Funke Akindele quickly disagreed with this statement, emphasizing that she does not support hatred toward men. “I don’t agree with that. I believe that men should respect women, and vice versa,” she responded, making it clear that respect should go both ways in any relationship.
