The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has fired back at former Governor Peter Odili’s recent accusations that he turned Rivers State into his personal estate. Wike, also an ex-governor of the oil-rich state, responded to Odili’s claims during a luncheon in Port Harcourt on Friday, vehemently denying the allegations.
Odili, who served as the governor of Rivers State for eight years, had recently criticized Wike, accusing him of using his time in office to treat the state as his personal property. Odili also commended the current Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, for preventing Wike from continuing with this alleged practice.
Wike, however, strongly rejected Odili’s accusations, defending his record as the governor of Rivers State. “I never said so. I paid money for Rivers people to be medical doctors. I am trying to make Rivers State the medical hub of South-South Nigeria. How did I now come to convert Rivers State into a personal estate?” Wike said, emphasizing his contributions to the state’s development and well-being.
The minister went on to assert that his efforts as governor were aimed at benefiting the people of Rivers State and not for personal gain. “I am the best governor that Rivers State has ever produced. How did I convert Rivers State as my personal estate? And people will not answer simple question,” Wike added, defending his record in office.
Wike’s response was a direct counter to Odili’s claims that he had misused the resources of Rivers State for personal purposes. The former governor’s accusation seemed to touch a nerve with Wike, who has long been a polarizing figure in Nigerian politics. His response highlighted his ambitious plans for the state, including efforts to make it a regional hub for medical training and healthcare.
The exchange between the two former governors has fueled renewed discussions about the governance of Rivers State, a region known for its oil wealth and political significance. Wike’s tenure as governor, from 2015 to 2023, was marked by significant infrastructure development, including the construction of roads, bridges, and airports. However, his leadership also faced criticism for its handling of political opposition and controversy surrounding his policies.
Public reactions to the ongoing feud have been mixed. Some supporters of Wike have rallied behind him, praising his work in developing the state and pointing to his focus on education and healthcare. “He is not lying!!!! Go and check the infrastructure when Wike was governor!! He did a lot!!!” one user commented on social media, highlighting the physical and infrastructural improvements in Rivers during Wike’s tenure.
On the other hand, critics have questioned the veracity of Wike’s claims and the implications of his statements. “Go and relax my friend, your tenure is over, period!” a critic wrote, implying that Wike should move on and let the current administration take the reins. This exchange reflects the broader tensions in Rivers State politics, where the legacy of past leaders often looms large.
As for Peter Odili, his remarks about Wike’s alleged mismanagement of Rivers State continue to resonate with some, especially among those who were critical of Wike’s leadership style. Odili, who served as governor of the state from 1999 to 2007, remains an influential figure in Rivers politics, and his recent statements are seen as an attempt to reassert his influence and distance himself from Wike’s controversial legacy.
