The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has dismissed claims made by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) accusing him of conspiring to destabilize Osun State and assassinate Governor Ademola Adeleke. The PDP’s allegations were centered around claims that Egbetokun was colluding with the All Progressives Congress (APC) to enforce a “non-existent” court order to reinstate former local government chairmen in the state.
Osun State PDP Chairman, Sunday Bisi, had raised these concerns while addressing journalists in Osogbo, accusing the IGP of orchestrating a plan to disrupt the peace in the state. However, in a public statement, Egbetokun firmly rejected the accusations, choosing not to engage in what he referred to as “careless talk” from the opposition party.
Speaking during the decoration of senior officers in Abuja on Thursday, the IGP said, “I read about the allegations, but I refuse to dignify such absurdity with a response. I believe in challenging the distortion of facts. We will not allow the distortion of facts against us to go unchallenged.” Egbetokun emphasized that he was focused on his duties and had no time to address what he considered baseless claims.
Egbetokun further stated that “statements that are clearly contrary to reasoning don’t deserve our response,” adding that he was “too busy for careless talks.” He made it clear that his priority was maintaining law and order in Osun State, not engaging in political disputes.
The IGP also pointed out that his office had already taken action to address the situation on the ground in Osun, saying, “Mine is to respond to the call of the Commissioner of Police in the state for reinforcement. We have reinforced the command, and we have enough men on the ground to ensure that there is law and order in that state.”
He reassured the public that efforts were being made to prevent any further breakdown of law and order in Osun State, emphasizing the police force’s commitment to ensuring security and stability.
