NAFDAC Alerts Nigerians to Fake Dettol Soap in Circulation

NAFDAC

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sounded the alarm over a counterfeit soap circulating in Nigerian markets, labeled “Dettol Health Fresh Soap.” This fake product poses significant health risks to unsuspecting consumers, highlighting the agency’s critical role in safeguarding public health.

Recently, a consumer complaint was filed with Reckitt Benckiser Nigeria Limited, the manufacturer of genuine Dettol Antiseptic products, reporting skin irritation after using the counterfeit soap. Upon investigation, the company confirmed that the product is fake, as it does not have any product by that name. This incident underscores the dangers of counterfeit products and the need for vigilance.

NAFDAC’s prompt response to this threat demonstrates its commitment to protecting public health. The agency has directed its zonal directors and state coordinators to conduct surveillance and remove the fake product from circulation. Furthermore, NAFDAC has advised consumers to exercise caution when purchasing products, especially those related to personal hygiene and health.

The sale of fake and substandard products is a pervasive problem in Nigeria, with far-reaching consequences. These products often fail to meet regulatory standards, putting consumers at risk of adverse reactions, injury, or even death. Moreover, the economic implications are significant, as counterfeit products undermine the legitimacy of genuine manufacturers and compromise the integrity of the supply chain.

To combat this menace, NAFDAC has implemented various measures. The agency conducts regular inspections of manufacturing facilities, monitors product distribution channels, and collaborates with law enforcement agencies to prosecute offenders. Additionally, NAFDAC provides education and awareness campaigns to inform consumers about the risks associated with counterfeit products.

Consumers also have a critical role to play in preventing the spread of fake products. Verifying product authenticity, checking expiration dates, and reporting suspicious activities to NAFDAC are essential steps in safeguarding public health. By working together, Nigerians can create a safer, more informed market.
