As Nigeria grapples with a hunger crisis, the Federal Government has launched a subsidized rice program offering 50kg bags of milled rice at N40,000. However, to access this heavily discounted price, citizens must meet specific qualifications, including providing key identification documents.
To qualify for the subsidized rice, Nigerians are required to present their National Identification Number (NIN), an ID card, and an ATM card. These documents are necessary for both registration and payment processes. Once these steps are completed, beneficiaries will undergo a separate verification process conducted by government officials to ensure the distribution is both transparent and accurate.
In Abuja, the Nigeria Agricultural Insurance Corporation (NAIC) has been designated as the primary center for processing applications. After registration and payment are confirmed, citizens can collect their rice at the Central Business Area near the First Bank Branch by NNPC Towers. The distribution will ensure that each person receives their 50kg bag of rice once they have passed the necessary checks.
Senator Abubakar Kyari, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, highlighted the importance of the program’s transparency and the steps being taken to minimize fraud. “The Federal Government is aware of the potential challenges associated with the sales of an important staple such as rice, and has deployed a multi-disciplinary machinery of government to ensure the transparency, wider reach, and success of this exercise,” Kyari stated. He also emphasized that each person would be limited to one bag of rice, and beneficiaries will be verified through their NIN and phone numbers to avoid exploitation.
The initiative, which includes the distribution of 30,000 metric tons of rice, is expected to provide relief and lower food prices across the country. The rice will be distributed to states nationwide, but only those who meet the documentation requirements will be able to access the program.
