The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) held a closed-door meeting on Monday, September 9, 2024, in response to the arrest of its National President, Joe Ajaero, by the Department of State Services (DSS) at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
Ajaero was arrested while on his way to attend the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in the United Kingdom, sparking concerns about the government’s intentions towards labour leaders.
The NLC has expressed its unwavering commitment to protecting workers’ rights and has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Ajaero.
Furthermore, the NLC has called for an end to harassment against labour leaders, the Nigerian working class, and innocent citizens who hold dissenting opinions. They also demand the release of Nigerians detained for participating in the #EndBadGovernance rallies.
The outcome of the closed-door meeting will be made public soon, as the NLC continues to navigate the challenges posed by Ajaero’s arrest and the government’s actions towards labour leaders.
