Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has reiterated his commitment to advancing Nigeria’s progress. Following a viral interview on News Central Television, Obi received calls from supporters and members of the Obidient Movement seeking clarification on his presidential ambition.
Obi emphasized that he is not desperate to become president or hold any position but is determined to see Nigeria develop. He stated, “I have been inundated with calls and concerns regarding the interview I granted to News Central TV… Let me reiterate clearly what I said, which is on record.”
Obi clarified that he did not declare his intention to be vice president to anyone, saying, “I explicitly stated my openness to working with others, provided their intentions were not centred on state capture.” He emphasized his commitment to partnering with those who share his vision for Nigeria’s progress.
The former Anambra State Governor remains committed to the Labour Party and is dedicated to bringing millions of out-of-school children back into classrooms. Obi stated, “I also made it clear that I remain committed to the Labour Party, and if anyone wishes to negotiate or join forces, they must disclose their true intentions.”
Obi expressed surprise at the misrepresentation of his words, reiterating that he never stated he would be vice president to anyone. He emphasized his commitment to building a new Nigeria, saying, “My commitment to Nigeria remains steadfast, and I even believe it is possible to contribute to its progress without occupying any office as I am already doing.”
Obi’s clarification comes as a response to concerns from his supporters and the Obidient Movement.
The former governor’s emphasis on addressing pressing challenges such as hunger, poverty, and insecurity resonates with some Nigerians.
