Controversial Nigerian singer Speed Darlington has spoken out after his release from Kuje prison, following months of detention over allegations of cyber-stalking and other legal issues.
Darlington was first arrested after claiming that Burna Boy’s Grammy award was due to his ties with embattled American rapper Diddy, who is currently facing sex trafficking and rape charges. His arrest in October 2024 for alleged cyber-stalking sparked widespread attention, with the singer remaining defiant despite his legal troubles.
“I will not stop my criticisms until Burna Boy compensates me,” Darlington declared after his initial release on bail in October. However, his defiance led to further complications. He was rearrested during a performance in Imo State on November 27, 2024, and held in Kuje prison for an extended period, despite being granted bail by the Federal High Court on December 23.
Darlington’s lawyer accused Burna Boy of influencing the police to prolong his detention. “Burna Boy bribed the police to keep my client behind bars despite the court granting him bail,” the lawyer alleged in a video shared on Instagram.
After weeks of advocacy and public outcry, Darlington was finally released on January 21, 2025. However, Burna Boy, in a now-deleted Instagram post, issued a stern warning to the controversial singer. “If he misbehaves again, he will find himself back in jail,” Burna Boy wrote.
Many netizens expected Darlington to return subdued and regretful after his prolonged incarceration. Instead, the singer broke his silence with a bold statement. In a video shared on his Instagram page, he posted a clip of two rams fiercely clashing their horns. Captioning the post, he wrote, “I’m back. To those fighting, one step back, it is not running away. He went to gather energy and launch back with a banger!”
