Toke Makinwa Challenges Assumptions About Single Life in New Year’s Message

TOKE MAKINWA

Toke Makinwa, the popular Nigerian media personality, has recently called for a shift in perceptions surrounding singlehood. As the New Year approaches, Makinwa took to her X (formerly Twitter) handle to challenge the widespread belief that single individuals are lonely and sad. In her message, she urged people to rethink the assumptions that tie personal happiness to being married.

“Let that rubbish behaviour of thinking that single people are miserable, lonely or sad be left in 2024,” Makinwa wrote. She expressed her frustration with the persistent stereotype that single people are automatically unhappy, pointing out that many of them lead content and fulfilled lives. Her message resonated with many, as it shed light on a narrative that often overlooks the complexities of personal fulfillment.

The media personality further elaborated on the idea, saying, “There’re so many people in horrible situations (whatever you call it) that secretly wish they were alone, so let people be.” This statement highlights a perspective that is often ignored in discussions about relationships: not all people in committed relationships are necessarily happy or content, and some individuals may prefer solitude over being in a bad relationship.

Makinwa’s message seemed to call for more empathy and understanding when it comes to how people choose to live their lives. She continued, “Beats me how some people think that every single person is lonely, it’ll shock you how content and happy single people are.” This part of her message challenges the assumptions that many hold about single individuals, suggesting that happiness is not exclusive to those in relationships.

However, the media personality also acknowledged the value of companionship, noting that “it’s good to do life with someone.” But she emphasized that personal fulfillment is a journey that starts with self-discovery, stating, “if you don’t find your own purpose you can be with someone and still be lonely.” This sentiment discusses the importance of personal growth and self-awareness in achieving happiness, regardless of one’s relationship status.
