Former U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested that he may pursue a third term in office, insisting that he is “not joking” about the possibility despite constitutional restrictions. His remarks, made in a recent phone interview and later reiterated to reporters, have sparked renewed debate about presidential term limits and potential legal challenges.

Speaking from his Mar-a-Lago residence in a phone interview with NBC News, Trump claimed that there are “methods” to bypass the two-term restriction that would otherwise prevent him from running again after 2028. He did not specify what those methods might be, but his statement has raised concerns about the potential for legal maneuvering.

Later, aboard Air Force One, Trump doubled down on the idea, arguing that many of his supporters believe he should remain in power. “In a way, it would be a fourth term because the 2020 election was totally rigged,” he said, repeating his long-standing, unproven claims about election fraud. His comments reflect his continued insistence that his loss to President Joe Biden was illegitimate.

Despite his bold assertions, Trump also appeared to temper expectations, adding, “I don’t want to talk about a third term now because, no matter how you look at it, we’ve got a long time to go.” This statement suggests that while he is entertaining the idea, he may not be actively planning such a move in the near future.

The U.S. Constitution’s 22nd Amendment, ratified in 1951, explicitly limits presidents to two elected terms. This rule was introduced after Franklin D. Roosevelt served four consecutive terms, prompting concerns about excessive executive power. Legal scholars and political analysts argue that any attempt to circumvent this amendment would likely face significant legal and political obstacles.
