Hon. Mojisola Meranda has officially resigned as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, citing the need to maintain the integrity of the legislature and prevent further crisis within the House. Her resignation, announced on Monday during a plenary session in Alausa, Ikeja, marks the end of her brief tenure, which began on January 13, 2025.

While addressing lawmakers, Meranda described her decision as a “personal sacrifice” aimed at resolving the ongoing leadership crisis. She emphasized that her guiding principle remains her family’s legacy of promoting democracy, good governance, and public service. “I have made a personal sacrifice towards resolving the leadership crisis rocking the Lagos State House of Assembly,” she stated.

Meranda explained that her resignation was not made lightly but was a necessary step to prevent the instability within the Assembly from threatening its democratic functions. “It is with heavy responsibility that I wish to resign my position as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly with effect from this day, March 3, 2025,” she declared. “On one hand, I accepted the position of Speaker, and on the other hand, I resigned because it is threatening the democracy of this House.”

She urged lawmakers to remain steadfast in upholding justice and fairness, stating, “Occasionally, we are confronted by overwhelming challenges and conflicts, but as responsible leaders, we must not break down the legislative House that we collectively built in pursuit of justice and fairness.”
