Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the current Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), has formally indicated her intention to seek a second term at the helm of the global trade body. Her candidacy now stands uncontested after no additional nominations were received by the November 8 deadline set by the WTO.

The WTO initiated the process for selecting its next Director-General on October 8, 2024, and allowed member states to submit nominations for the position until November 8. However, according to a communication sent to WTO members by Petter Olberg, the Chairman of the WTO General Council, Okonjo-Iweala remains the sole candidate for the role.

Olberg’s announcement confirmed that no other nominations had been put forward by the deadline, signaling the path to her reappointment. “Under the procedures for the appointment of Directors-General (WT/L/509), I am required to communicate to members a consolidated list of candidatures received for the post of Director-General immediately after the close of the nomination period,” Olberg explained in his message.

The statement went on to note that, as of the conclusion of the nomination period on November 8, the only candidacy received for the post was from Dr. Okonjo-Iweala. Her notification of intent to seek reappointment was circulated to all WTO members in advance of the nomination deadline. The document, marked JOB/GC/406, was dated September 16, 2024.

This marks a significant moment for Okonjo-Iweala, who has led the WTO since March 2021. During her tenure, she has overseen several pivotal issues facing the global trade community, including addressing the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on international trade and leading efforts to reform WTO functions and dispute resolution mechanisms.

Her leadership has been widely praised, especially for breaking new ground as the first woman and the first African to serve as Director-General of the WTO. Her ongoing term has seen efforts to reinvigorate the multilateral trade system at a time of rising protectionism and economic nationalism across the globe.

With no other candidates emerging, Okonjo-Iweala’s reappointment seems all but assured. According to WTO procedures, the final approval for the Director-General is expected to take place at the upcoming WTO General Council meeting, though no date has yet been confirmed.

As the WTO moves forward with the process, observers are eager to see how Okonjo-Iweala will continue to navigate the complexities of global trade. Her second term is likely to focus on further enhancing the organization’s role in addressing climate change, digital trade, and the reform of global supply chains, which remain critical issues for member states.
