Afenifere, the Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, has warned the National Assembly against hastily removing Senate President Godswill Akpabio over allegations of sexual harassment leveled against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti. The group emphasized the need for a thorough investigation before any action is taken.
In a statement issued by its Organizing Secretary, Kole Omololu, Afenifere stressed that unverified allegations should not be used as a basis to undermine Akpabio’s leadership. “There should be a thorough investigation before the Senate takes action against the former governor of Akwa Ibom State,” Omololu stated.
The controversy erupted following Akpoti’s allegations that Akpabio had made inappropriate advances toward her. The accusation has sparked debate within the political sphere, with some lawmakers and interest groups calling for Akpabio’s resignation, while others insist on due process.
Afenifere, however, pointed out that Akpabio’s contributions to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration should not be overlooked. The group described him as a stabilizing force in the government, urging caution in handling the allegations.
“We in Afenifere note and appreciate the political stability engendered by the calm, thoughtful, and patriotic leadership of the National Assembly by the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio,” the statement read. “We are hopeful that such a committed patriot will not be sacrificed on the altar of unproven allegations by an accuser.”
While calling for an investigation, Afenifere expressed concern over the timing of the allegations, suggesting that they may be linked to recent disciplinary actions taken against Akpoti by the Senate President. “Of course, the allegations should be investigated by a Senate Committee. But we cannot help but notice that they were made after the Senate President’s act of just discipline against Senator Natasha Akpoti,” Omololu stated.
The group also cautioned against rushing to conclusions based on emotions rather than facts. “Hopefully, this is not a knee-jerk reaction made in a highly emotional state by the disciplined party,” the statement continued. “That being the case, the nation has to be careful in assessing these allegations, as they may or may not result from animosity toward that disciplinary measure.”
Despite its defense of Akpabio, Afenifere refrained from discrediting Akpoti’s claims outright, maintaining that the allegations should be treated with fairness. “Afenifere, without passing any judgment on the accuser and her accusations, extends the right hand of fellowship to Senator Godswill Akpabio,” the group said.
The Yoruba socio-political organization further commended Akpabio for his role in the administration’s reforms. “We commend him for being a steady hand during these times of political, economic, and social reforms of the Renewed Hope agenda,” the statement concluded.
