Social media influencer Enioluwa Adeoluwa has called out Nigerians for frequently comparing Nollywood actress Funke Akindele to American actress Taraji P. Henson. He expressed his frustration over the constant comparisons, arguing that Nigerian stars should be celebrated for their unique achievements rather than being measured against Western celebrities.
Taking to Twitter on Monday, Enioluwa shared his thoughts on the matter, emphasizing the need to recognize Akindele for who she is—an independent and successful figure in Nollywood. According to him, such comparisons diminish the originality and impact of Nigerian icons.
“I really don’t like seeing comments calling Aunty Funke the ‘Nigerian version of Taraji P. Henson,’” he wrote. “As much as I love Taraji and admire her work, I don’t understand the constant need to compare our icons to Western figures.”
Akindele, a renowned actress, filmmaker, and producer, has made a name for herself in Nollywood, breaking box office records with her films. She is best known for her hit movies Omo Ghetto: The Saga and Battle on Buka Street, which both became the highest-grossing Nollywood films of their time.
Enioluwa stressed that Akindele’s success speaks for itself and that she should be recognized on her own terms. “Funke Akindele is The Funke Akindele—an unstoppable box office record breaker. She’s not a version of anyone but herself,” he added.
