Former President Muhammadu Buhari has disclosed that he sustains himself through rental income from one of his properties in Kaduna State, emphasizing his commitment to transparency during his presidency. The revelation came during an All Progressives Congress (APC) caucus meeting on January 25, 2025, held at the Presidential Banquet Hall in the Government House of Katsina State.

Speaking in Hausa, Buhari reflected on the importance of honesty and accountability in public service. He underscored that throughout his time as president, he refrained from accumulating wealth through illicit means, a point he emphasized during his address to the APC caucus. “The income from one of the houses in Kaduna supports my day-to-day living,” Buhari said, explaining that he rents out the property to meet his personal needs.

Buhari’s declaration was a continuation of his long-standing message about the need for ethical leadership. He took pride in the fact that his assets are modest, consisting of just three properties: one in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, and two in Kaduna State. This simple approach to wealth accumulation, he suggested, was one of the core principles that guided his presidency.

The former president also addressed the challenges of governing Nigeria, offering a candid perspective on the complexities of leadership in a diverse country. “Nigeria is a difficult country to govern, but most Nigerians don’t understand this,” he remarked, adding that the intricacies of leadership become truly apparent only when one holds the reins of power. His comments highlighted the pressures and complexities that often go unnoticed by the public.

Reflecting on his post-presidency life, Buhari expressed a sense of relief about his improved well-being. “I look much better and healthier now than when I was president. Anyone who sees me now can tell the difference,” he said, noting that the demands of his office had taken a toll on his health. His remarks seemed to offer a glimpse into the more relaxed and less demanding lifestyle he now enjoys, after stepping away from the intensity of leadership.

Buhari also reiterated his belief in public service without corruption, insisting that no one could accuse him of illicit enrichment during his time in office. His commitment to transparency and ethical governance was a recurring theme in his speech, and he appeared determined to leave behind a legacy of integrity.

During the APC caucus meeting, Buhari’s reflections on his presidency seemed to strike a chord with many in attendance, as the party gears up for the upcoming local government elections in Katsina State. The meeting served as a platform for the party to discuss strategies for the elections, with Buhari’s experience and leadership still regarded as a central figure in the party’s efforts.
