Afe Babalola Drops Criminal Charges Against Dele Farotimi After Mediation Efforts

Prominent Nigerian lawyer Afe Babalola has decided to withdraw the criminal charges he had filed against human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi. The decision follows a mediation led by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, alongside other traditional rulers. Farotimi faced legal action after alleging in his book, Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System, that Babalola had corrupted the judiciary, a claim that sparked significant legal and public controversy.

During a press briefing n Sunday, Babalola explained his decision to drop the charges, stating that his respect for Yoruba traditional institutions played a significant role in his choice. “From time immemorial, the words of an Oba in Yoruba culture are commands,” Babalola said, emphasizing the importance of obeying the counsel of traditional rulers. He also remarked that he had “nothing to gain from his imprisonment” and expressed that he finds greater joy in giving rather than seeking retribution.

Babalola’s decision to forgive Farotimi, despite the serious accusations, was seen as a magnanimous gesture rooted in Yoruba cultural values. “I rejected an oil block, defended the EFCC law, and turned down ministerial offers twice. Why would anyone seek to tarnish what I’ve laboured for?” he said, indicating that the allegations had no personal impact on him. His statement also reinforced his commitment to serving Nigeria without pursuing personal gains.

The mediation efforts were spearheaded by the Ooni of Ife, who expressed gratitude to Babalola for his decision to drop the charges. “We came together as traditional rulers to appeal to him, and he gave full respect to the Obas by agreeing,” Ogunwusi said, praising Babalola’s decision. He also acknowledged Babalola’s invaluable contributions to the Yoruba race and his legacy in Nigeria and beyond.

The Ooni further highlighted the significance of forgiveness in Yoruba culture, stressing that, as elders, traditional rulers aim to reprimand their children when they err, but also to forgive them. “Dele Farotimi is your son. As elders, when our children offend us, we reprimand them but also forgive them,” Ogunwusi noted, emphasizing the role of compassion in maintaining unity within the community.

Babalola’s reputation, both as a lawyer and philanthropist, has remained largely unblemished throughout his career, and the Ooni of Ife was quick to affirm his standing. “Aare Afe Babalola’s contributions to the Yoruba race, Nigeria, and the world are undeniable,” the traditional ruler said, underscoring Babalola’s longstanding impact on society.
