British-Nigerian singer Darkoo has courageously opened up about coming out as a lesbian to her Nigerian parents, sharing the emotional journey on The Appointment Show with Layo.
“The day I told my mum, I felt a massive weight off my shoulders, and I’ve been happy since then,” Darkoo revealed. “Now that everyone knows what I’m on, I feel happier.” She noted that sharing her truth with her father was easier, while her mother required a more emotional conversation.
“It was harder with my mum because I’m closer to her,” Darkoo explained. “My dad didn’t want to have the conversation; he didn’t stop it though.” Despite initial reservations, Darkoo’s parents have accepted her.
“This is what makes me happy, and I feel whole,” Darkoo emphasized. “I don’t feel like I’m faking it or doing what I don’t want to do. This is me, and I’m very spiritual; my heart is clean and pure, and I’m loving.”
Darkoo acknowledged that her parents, being African, may not fully understand her sexuality. However, their love and acceptance remain unwavering. “I bring girls home, and my parents don’t mind,” she said. “I have parents who love me for me.”
