In a dramatic turn of events, former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has ridiculed the ongoing internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing the situation as increasingly “exciting.” His comments come on the heels of a faction of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) suspending key leaders for alleged disloyalty.
The crisis escalated when the faction aligned with acting National Chairman Umar Damagum suspended National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu and National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade. The suspensions were attributed to purported disloyalty, further intensifying the internal conflict within the main opposition party.
Fayose, who has previously dismissed rumors of leaving the PDP, took to social media to express his amusement at the unfolding drama. “PDP: It is becoming such an exciting drama. Let’s siddon dey look and see how it ends,” he tweeted, highlighting his perspective on the chaos.
The PDP’s internal strife shows no sign of resolution, with multiple factions vying for power and influence. The crisis reflects a deeper struggle for control, as members clash over leadership and party loyalty.
In a subsequent move, Debo Ologunagba, the National Publicity Secretary, countered the earlier suspensions by announcing the suspension of Damagum and Anyanwu. His statement indicated that the NWC had extensively considered complaints regarding the pair’s actions, particularly concerning a legal matter involving former PDP members who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The NWC condemned the actions of Damagum and Anyanwu as “anti-party activities,” arguing that their conduct violated both the PDP Constitution and their Oath of Office. This led to their suspension pending further investigation by the National Disciplinary Committee.
The fallout from these suspensions raises questions about the future of the PDP as it grapples with internal dissent and factionalism. As the situation develops, many within and outside the party are watching closely to see how these dramatic events will unfold.
