Nigerian singer Habeeb Olalomi Badmus, better known as Portable, has publicly criticized fellow artist Speed Darlington following an invitation to perform at his upcoming concert. The altercation began when Speed Darlington, whose real name is Darlington Okoye, extended an offer to the “Zazu” crooner for an appearance at his show, which is set for April 13. However, Portable wasted no time in dismissing the invitation, claiming that Speed Darlington was only “imagining things” if he thought he could secure his performance.
Portable’s response was not only dismissive but also laced with strong criticism aimed at the indigenous rapper. In a fiery outburst, the controversial singer accused Speed Darlington of attempting to use him for publicity. He further claimed that Speed Darlington, whom he described as a “tout,” did not belong to the same level as him in the music industry. “I’m not a tout like you. I’m a hero, a superstar, a celebrity. I perform everywhere—I’ve performed in London, in America,” Portable declared during his tirade.
Speed Darlington, known for his unique style and outspoken nature, seemed to have underestimated Portable’s reaction. The singer, who gained widespread recognition for his breakout single “Zazu,” has built a reputation for his bold and unapologetic persona, often making headlines for his controversial statements and actions. His rejection of Speed Darlington’s invitation further solidifies his position in the industry as an artist who values his status and will not easily align himself with acts he considers beneath him.
In addition to his public criticism, Portable set conditions for any potential collaboration, demanding a massive ₦20 million fee to perform at Speed Darlington’s concert. The demand for such a high sum is indicative of the artist’s self-asserted value in the entertainment industry. Portable’s comment was a clear message that he is not willing to perform at just any event without receiving substantial compensation.
