Rivers State Governor Approves New Minimum Wage for Civil Servants

RIVERS STATE

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has announced a new minimum wage of N85,000 for civil servants, marking a significant increase that aligns with recent wage adjustments in Lagos. This decision is expected to enhance the financial well-being of state employees.

The new wage was confirmed during a closed-door meeting at Government House in Port Harcourt, where the Governor met with representatives from organized labor, specifically the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council. The meeting emphasized collaboration between the state government and labor representatives.

According to a statement released by Nelson Chukwudi, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, the approved minimum wage reflects the government’s commitment to improving the livelihoods of civil servants in the state. The implementation of this new wage is set to begin in November 2024.

Dr. George Nwaeke, Head of the Rivers State Civil Service, briefed the media following the meeting. He expressed satisfaction with the Governor’s decision, stating, “He (Fubara) has announced a figure that is higher than the National Minimum Wage.” This new rate is designed to provide civil servants with better financial support.

Nwaeke further highlighted the significance of the increase, asserting that it marks a milestone for civil servants in the state. “Rivers State civil servants have never had it this good since the inception of this state,” he remarked, reflecting the positive impact of the wage adjustment.

The response from labor union leaders was overwhelmingly positive, with many stakeholders expressing their approval of the new wage structure. This collaborative approach has fostered a sense of partnership between the government and labor organizations in Rivers State.
