In the wake of President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, Governor Siminilayi Fubara has assured the residents that the state remains safe, secured, and peaceful under his leadership. Speaking to the people of Rivers on Tuesday in Port Harcourt, Fubara addressed concerns surrounding the announcement, reassuring citizens that his administration has maintained order and stability throughout its tenure.
Governor Fubara began his address by emphasizing that his administration had been driven by a “constitutional oath of office and a great sense of duty” since he assumed office. He urged the people to remain calm and law-abiding in light of the emergency rule, highlighting that their safety and well-being remained his top priority.
“We have always prioritized the protection of lives and property and ensured the continuous progress of our state,” Fubara stated, asserting that despite challenges, his government had upheld the rule of law. “Even in the face of political impasse, we have remained committed to constitutional order and the rule of law, putting the interest of our people above all else.”
The Governor reflected on the administration’s actions in response to President Tinubu’s intervention aimed at brokering peace within the state. He noted that the government moved swiftly to implement the agreed terms, which included the return of commissioners who had previously resigned. “We did not hesitate to implement the agreed terms in good faith, including welcoming back commissioners who had previously resigned on their own volition,” Fubara explained.
Following the Supreme Court’s ruling, Governor Fubara revealed that his government took immediate steps to restore normalcy in Rivers State. “We moved swiftly to comply with the Supreme Court’s judgment as soon as we received the certified true copy of the judgment,” he said, emphasizing that these actions were aimed at ensuring peace, unity, and stability in the state.
Fubara also spoke candidly about the difficulties faced by his administration due to ongoing political tensions. “Unfortunately, at every turn, members of the Rivers State House of Assembly frustrated our efforts, thus making genuine peace and progress difficult,” he lamented. Despite these setbacks, Fubara remained determined in his pursuit of peace and governance for the betterment of the people.
The Governor reaffirmed that the security of lives and property continued to be a central focus of his administration, alongside the advancement of Rivers State’s prosperity. “Our priorities remain the security of lives and property, as well as advancing the well-being and prosperity of our people,” he said.
In addressing the political disagreements within the state, Fubara assured the people that good governance had remained intact. “Despite the political disagreements in the state, good governance has continued,” he noted. “Salaries are being paid, and great projects are being executed to move the state forward.”
Fubara concluded his address by reiterating his confidence in the resilience of Rivers State’s people. “Rivers people have always been resilient,” he said. “We will continue to face this situation with wisdom, patience, and unwavering faith in the democratic process.”
