In a shocking incident that unfolded in Jos, Plateau State, suspected cult members were killed by an angry mob after they attempted to rob residents of their belongings. The violent attack occurred on the morning of Friday, November 24, and has left the community in disbelief. Local authorities are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the suspected criminals, who were reportedly mobbed and set ablaze by the residents.
The incident was confirmed by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Plateau State Police Command, Alfred Alabo. In an official statement, Alabo detailed how law enforcement had responded to an urgent distress call from the community. “At approximately 09:20 am, a group of yet to be identified cult members had invaded their community and were attempting to rob law-abiding citizens of their belongings,” he said.
The police were alerted to the situation by a concerned citizen who made the distress call. Acting swiftly, the Plateau State Commissioner of Police ordered the Divisional Police Officer of “A” Division Jos to dispatch officers to the scene and launch an investigation. Alabo further explained that the police were hoping to prevent any escalation of the situation as they worked to address the reported robbery.
However, by the time police arrived at the scene, the situation had already spiraled out of control. “Upon arrival, our team discovered that an angry mob had taken matters into their own hands,” Alabo noted. The mob had allegedly cornered the suspected robbers, mobbed them, and ultimately set them on fire. The charred remains of the suspects were found at the site.
In response, the police, along with local government officials, moved to ensure the victims’ remains were properly handled. “The Police, in collaboration with the leadership of Jos North Local Government Area, have evacuated the burnt bodies from the scene and deposited them at the hospital morgue,” Alabo added in his statement.
The Plateau State Police Command immediately intensified their investigation into the incident. During the investigation, law enforcement discovered two locally fabricated pistols believed to belong to the suspected cult members. The weapons were found at the scene and have been seized as part of the ongoing probe into the attempted robbery and the subsequent mob justice.
The local community remains on edge following the disturbing events, with many residents expressing mixed feelings about the actions of the mob. While some residents have voiced their support for the vigilante response, others are concerned about the legality and morality of taking the law into their own hands.
Authorities are calling for calm and urging residents to refrain from taking justice into their own hands. “We are committed to ensuring that those responsible for this act of mob violence are held accountable, and we urge citizens to allow the law to take its course,” Alabo stressed.
