Former presidential aide, Pastor Reno Omokri, has continued to push for disciplinary action against Ushie Uguamaye, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member widely known as Raye, following her viral criticism of President Bola Tinubu over Nigeria’s ongoing economic crisis. Omokri, known for his outspoken political views, has insisted that Raye’s actions warrant formal consequences, which has sparked a wave of reactions from Nigerians across social media platforms.
Raye’s comments about President Tinubu’s handling of the country’s economic situation went viral after she expressed frustration over the state of affairs. Following her remarks, the NYSC summoned her to appear before her Local Government Inspector in Lagos on Monday, March 17. Raye also alleged that NYSC officials began threatening her, fueling concerns that she could face severe disciplinary measures, including potential expulsion from the program.
In the wake of the growing controversy, Nigerian activist Omoyele Sowore showed his support for Raye by accompanying her to the NYSC office. His presence further heightened public anxiety, with many fearing that Raye was being unfairly targeted for voicing her opinion. Social media platforms quickly became a space for Nigerians to voice their support for Raye, condemning what they perceived as intimidation tactics from the authorities.
Amid the debate, some individuals suggested that Raye’s case could be influenced by ethnic bias, particularly considering her ethnic background. However, Pastor Omokri strongly rejected these claims, arguing that the issue was not related to tribal discrimination. He pointed to a similar incident in 2018, where musician Davido faced punishment under President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration for absconding from his NYSC camp. Omokri emphasized that despite Davido’s powerful connections in the Southwest, no tribal bias was alleged, and no political figures intervened in his case.
In defense of his position, Omokri wrote: “This is not about politics or ethnicity. Under President Buhari, the NYSC disciplined music star Davido for flouting its rule. The people of the Southwest did not accuse the NYSC of tribalism, and the PDP did not accuse President Buhari of witch-hunting an opposition politician.” Omokri’s statement made it clear that he believes the matter at hand is about upholding NYSC rules, rather than allowing politics or ethnicity to cloud judgment.
According to Omokri, accountability is essential in Raye’s case, and the same principles that applied to Davido’s situation should be enforced in her case. Omokri further stressed that Nigeria’s governance should be based on the rule of law rather than emotions or personal sentiments. “There must be a rule of law in Nigeria rather than rule by sentiments,” he added, reinforcing his call for a fair and unbiased approach to the situation.
