Nollywood actress Toyin Abraham is facing backlash after a video she posted online raised questions about the authenticity of items she endorsed. The video, which featured the actress promoting a fashion store, quickly became the center of controversy when fashion critic T20luxry accused the store of selling counterfeit luxury products.
Abraham, who had recently attended the wedding of Iyabo Ojo’s daughter in Tanzania, was seen showcasing a designer Birkin bag, which T20luxry claimed was an imitation.
The fashion critic did not hold back, stating that the store Abraham was endorsing was known for selling fake designer items. “The Birkin bag in the video is not authentic,” T20luxry remarked. “It’s disappointing to see Toyin Abraham use her platform to promote counterfeit goods.” The critic further claimed that by featuring such items in her video, the actress may be inadvertently supporting the counterfeit fashion industry, which is notorious for its impact on the legitimate luxury market.
To intensify the backlash, T20luxry also brought up an older post by Abraham in which the actress condemned movie piracy and its detrimental effects on Nollywood. The critic used this to accuse Abraham of hypocrisy, noting the actress’s outspoken stance against piracy in the film industry while allegedly supporting counterfeit fashion products. “How can Toyin Abraham fight against piracy in films but turn a blind eye to counterfeit luxury goods?” T20luxry questioned, suggesting that Abraham’s actions undermined her previous anti-piracy messages.
The accusations have divided opinions among Abraham’s followers. While some fans have defended the actress, suggesting that she might not have been aware of the counterfeit nature of the items, others have criticized her for promoting products that could damage the image of the luxury fashion industry. “As a public figure, Toyin Abraham should be more careful about what she endorses,” one follower commented. “Her influence means she has a responsibility to ensure the authenticity of the products she promotes.”
This controversy is not an isolated case in the Nigerian entertainment industry. Other celebrities, including Iyabo Ojo, businessman E-Money, and food critic Opeyemi Famakin, have also faced similar accusations in the past regarding the use of counterfeit luxury items. These instances have sparked widespread discussions about the growing problem of fake designer goods and the role that public figures play in perpetuating their popularity.
