Habeeb Okikiola, widely known as Portable, has made headlines once again by openly soliciting financial assistance from music producer Don Jazzy. This comes after Don Jazzy made a significant donation of N100 million to activist Verydarkman (VDM), who had recently launched a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) to aid people in need. Portable, who is known for his bold and unfiltered approach, took to social media to request financial support from Don Jazzy, sparking further debate online.
VDM, who has become a prominent figure in Nigerian activism, had recently opened a charity account for his NGO. The account has already attracted over N70 million in donations from wealthy individuals. On the morning of Thursday, October 17th, VDM revealed he had received an astonishing N100 million from an anonymous donor, expressing shock and excitement over the unexpected windfall. “I didn’t even know the money was coming,” VDM said in his announcement. “But I’m grateful for it. This is all for the people.”
Shortly after, VDM received a message from Don Jazzy, who confirmed he had made the donation. Don Jazzy expressed his support for VDM’s mission and assured that he believed the funds would be managed transparently. “I’m doing this because I trust in what you are doing and I know you will handle it well,” Don Jazzy reportedly told VDM. This generous contribution soon gained widespread attention on social media, with many fans and celebrities applauding Don Jazzy’s philanthropy.
Among those who quickly responded to the news was Portable, who took to Instagram to directly ask Don Jazzy for help. Portable, known for his no-holds-barred style, didn’t shy away from using the opportunity to voice his frustration. In his Instagram story, the ‘Zazuu’ hitmaker appealed to Don Jazzy, saying, “Don Jazzy, Don Jazzy, Don Jazzy, I call you three times, no dey use me motivate your signees, bless me, help me, give me money.” Portable expressed disappointment that Don Jazzy had not responded to his earlier direct messages asking for assistance.
In his message, Portable also seemed to take a veiled swipe at Verydarkman, insinuating that the activist may have created the NGO account for personal gain rather than for the benefit of Nigerians. “Person wey talk say Na Nigeria he dey fight for, he is fighting for himself,” Portable stated, suggesting that VDM was more interested in self-enrichment. This remark added to the ongoing conversation about the transparency of NGOs and the intentions behind such charitable efforts.
Portable also referenced a past interview in which Don Jazzy had mentioned using him as inspiration for his Mavin Records signees, encouraging them to boost their online presence like Portable had done. The artist seemed to feel that, instead of being used as motivation for others, Don Jazzy should reward him financially for his contributions to the music industry and his influence on social media. “Bless me, help me, give me money,” Portable insisted.
