Nigerian social media commentator Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as Verydarkman (VDM), has recently taken a swipe at Nollywood actress Eniola Badmus and her critics while addressing the upcoming presidential election. VDM, known for his bold and unfiltered opinions, criticized celebrities who publicly endorse politicians, suggesting that their support is often motivated by personal interests rather than genuine political conviction. His comments have sparked an ongoing debate about the role of celebrities in Nigerian politics.
In his critique, VDM alleged that many celebrities who align themselves with political figures do so not because of a strong belief in their ideologies, but because they stand to gain financially or socially from the association. He urged Nigerians to be more discerning and avoid allowing public figures to influence their political decisions. “Until you know who you are, you will continue being sheep to the wrong shepherd,” he stated, calling for more independent thought when it comes to voting.
The controversy surrounding Eniola Badmus flared up again after she publicly reaffirmed her support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Badmus, who had previously endorsed Tinubu during the presidential elections, faced significant backlash at the time, with many critics accusing her of supporting the president for personal gain. This criticism intensified after her appointment as special adviser to the Speaker of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Tajudeen Abass, a move that some saw as a reward for her political loyalty.
Despite the backlash and growing public dissatisfaction, particularly with the current administration, Badmus remained steadfast in her support for Tinubu. The actress took to Instagram to reaffirm her commitment to the president and his government, stating that she continued to believe in his leadership despite the mounting criticisms. Her post, however, was met with mixed reactions, as many Nigerians, especially social media activists, questioned her motivations for continuing to back the president.
In response to Badmus’ post, Verydarkman weighed in with his criticism, emphasizing that celebrities like her should not be seen as political role models. “Celebrities campaign for politicians not out of genuine belief but for financial benefits or increased public recognition,” VDM argued. His statement resonated with many who felt that the endorsement of public figures often lacks authenticity and is driven by personal ambition rather than a commitment to public welfare.
As the political climate intensifies ahead of the presidential election, VDM’s comments underscore the need for Nigerians to carefully assess who they trust and why. “Eniola Badmus, other celebrities, and the foolish Nigerians enabling them,” he said, continuing his critique, “Until you know who you are, you will continue being sheep to the wrong shepherd.”
