President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic stampede at a children’s funfair in Ibadan, Oyo State, which claimed the lives of 35 minors and left several others injured. The incident occurred on December 18, 2024, and has left the community and the nation in mourning.
In a statement issued by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu extended his heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Oyo State, as well as to the families who lost their children in the tragic event. “President Tinubu has urgently directed the relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances of this tragedy thoroughly,” the statement read.
The President emphasized the importance of a comprehensive investigation into the incident to determine whether negligence or deliberate actions played a role in the disaster. “It is imperative to determine whether negligence or deliberate actions contributed to this painful incident, ensuring a transparent and accountable process,” President Tinubu said.
Tinubu’s statement also conveyed his solidarity with the affected families. “The President extends his heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Oyo State, as well as to the grieving families who have lost their beloved children,” the statement continued. “In this moment of mourning, President Tinubu stands in solidarity with the affected families and offers prayers that the Almighty God will grant peace to the souls of those who have departed in this unfortunate event.”
The President also called on the Oyo State Government to take all necessary measures to prevent such tragedies from happening in the future. He stressed the need for stronger safety protocols at public events to safeguard vulnerable groups, particularly children.
Furthermore, President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to the safety and well-being of children. “No event should ever compromise their safety or take precedence over their lives,” he said, underscoring the importance of protecting the nation’s future generations.
