Ooni of Ile-Ife’s Estranged Wife Arrested After Tragic Stampede at Children’s Carnival in Ibadan

Naomi Silekunola, the estranged wife of the Ooni of Ile-Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has been arrested following a devastating stampede that occurred during a children’s carnival she organized in Ibadan. The tragic incident, which unfolded on December 18, 2024, at the Islamic High School in Bashorun, Ibadan, has left 35 minors dead and six others critically injured.

 

The arrest was confirmed by the Oyo State Police Command, which has been investigating the incident. Police spokesperson Adewale Osifeso issued a statement, confirming that eight individuals, including Silekunola, had been detained in connection with the event. “Eight persons have since been arrested for their various involvements in the event,” Osifeso said, adding that the individuals arrested ranged in age from 25 to 56 years.

 

Among those arrested were Silekunola, aged 31, and Fasasi Abdulahi, the 56-year-old principal of the Islamic High School where the carnival took place. Other detainees include Genesis Christopher, Tanimowo Moruf, Anisolaja Olabode, Idowu Ibrahim, and Abiola Oluwatimilehin, with ages spanning from 25 to 52 years. The arrests come as part of the ongoing investigation into the tragic events that led to the stampede.

The stampede occurred after a large crowd gathered for the carnival, resulting in chaos and a deadly crush of children. According to the police statement, the incident tragically claimed the lives of 35 minors, with six others reported to be in critical condition. “So far, 35 minors have been documented dead while six others are critically injured,” the statement noted, emphasizing the severity of the situation.

 

The Oyo State Police have since transferred the case to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), where the Deputy Commissioner of Police is now leading the investigation. “Justice will be served accordingly,” Osifeso assured the public, promising thorough action and accountability as the inquiry continues.

 

In response to the tragedy, the police have taken additional measures to ensure peace and security in the area. “Residents around the axis are advised not to panic as they would witness high-level patrols and visible police presence,” the statement emphasized, reinforcing the importance of maintaining order while the investigation proceeds.
