In a controversial statement, Chief Bisi Akande, former interim chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has claimed that the EndSARS protest was not a spontaneous movement but rather a plot to end the political career of Bola Tinubu, a prominent APC figure. According to Akande, the Obidients, supporters of Peter Obi, were allegedly behind the protest, which he suggested had foreign backing, specifically from the United States, with the goal of derailing Tinubu’s political aspirations.
This assertion is likely to ignite a heated debate across the nation, as many Nigerians view the EndSARS movement as a legitimate response to police brutality. The protest, which garnered widespread attention both locally and internationally in October 2020, was driven by years of growing frustration over human rights violations by the now-defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a controversial police unit accused of widespread abuse.
“The protest was not just about police brutality; it was part of a larger foreign-backed initiative aimed at stalling the political career of Tinubu,” Akande reportedly stated, drawing sharp criticism from various quarters.
