Charly Boy Issues Stern Warning Over Detention of Lawyer Dele Farotimi in Defamation Case

Nigerian singer and activist Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has issued a stern warning following the detention of Lagos-based lawyer, Dele Farotimi, over alleged defamation of legal icon Aare Afe Babalola (SAN). In an outspoken statement, Charly Boy threatened to release damaging information about the revered legal figure if Farotimi is not granted bail by December 20, 2024.

Farotimi, who was arraigned on December 4, 2024, is facing sixteen charges of alleged defamation related to his book, *Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System*. In the book, Farotimi accused Afe Babalola of corrupting the judiciary and procuring favorable judgments from the Supreme Court. The allegations have sparked significant controversy, leading to Farotimi’s arrest and subsequent remand in prison.

In his statement, Charly Boy expressed frustration over Farotimi’s continued detention. “If dem no release Dele on bail tomorrow, we are going to go ballistic with the information we have on Are Babalola,” Charly Boy warned. “We won’t be playing dis time. Enough of dis nonsense. Dia Father’s,” he added, making it clear that the situation was no longer a matter for lighthearted negotiation.

Farotimi, who has pleaded not guilty to all charges, has remained in prison custody since his arraignment. His case has drawn widespread attention, with many questioning the fairness of his detention. Despite the seriousness of the charges against him, Farotimi’s legal team continues to push for his release on bail, arguing that he has not been granted a fair chance to defend himself.

The controversy has also led to public discourse on the role of influential figures in the Nigerian judicial system and the potential abuse of power within the country’s legal framework. Many supporters of Farotimi view his arrest as a direct attack on free speech and legal reform, especially given the allegations of judicial corruption made in his book.

In his statement, Charly Boy underscored his anger at the situation, calling it a moment of serious consequence. “This is not the time for jokes,” he declared. His comments reflect growing public concern over the treatment of outspoken critics of powerful figures in Nigeria.
