Following President Bola Tinubu’s directive, Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja for New York to represent Nigeria at the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). This decision allows President Tinubu to focus on pressing domestic issues, including the recent devastating flood disaster.

According to Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the Presidency on Media and Communications, Vice President Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement and participate in key meetings and bilateral engagements during the session. The high-level general debate, themed “Leaving no one behind: Acting Together for the Advancement of Peace, Sustainable Development and Human Dignity for Present and Future Generations,” will take place from September 24 to 28.

As the leader of the Nigerian delegation, Vice President Shettima’s attendance underscores Nigeria’s commitment to global cooperation and addressing pressing international issues. The UNGA provides a platform for world leaders to engage in meaningful discussions and forge partnerships for sustainable development.
