Hoodlums set fire to the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) office in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area, causing widespread concern over the integrity of the local government elections. However, the state police have confirmed that election materials remain untouched and that the elections are continuing as scheduled.
The attack, which occurred in the early hours, was swiftly acknowledged by the Akwa Ibom State Police Command. ASP Timfon John, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed that the office was partially set ablaze by hoodlums but assured the public that the essential electoral materials had been spared.
“Some hoodlums partially set the AKISIEC office in Ibiono Ibom ablaze, but the election materials remained intact,” John stated. He further added, “The election is also ongoing.” Despite the damage to the building, the electoral process was not significantly affected, and voting continued without interruption.
John reassured the public that security around the state had been strengthened, particularly around AKISIEC offices and other strategic locations, to prevent further incidents. “We have beefed up security across the state, especially around AKISIEC offices and other sensitive locations,” he said.
The attack on the AKISIEC office has raised concerns about the possibility of election disruptions, but the police remain vigilant. “We are working tirelessly to ensure the elections proceed without any further issues,” ASP John stated, stressing the importance of maintaining law and order throughout the electoral process.
Local residents and political observers had feared that the attack might be an attempt to sabotage the elections, but so far, the polling process has continued without major disruptions. The police’s quick response and assurance of heightened security have alleviated some of these concerns.
In response to the fire, fire service personnel were called to the scene to contain the blaze, which was quickly brought under control. No casualties were reported, but there were concerns over the extent of the damage to the building.
Election officials, along with security agencies, are closely monitoring the situation to ensure that no further incidents occur. With the local government elections taking place across Akwa Ibom, all eyes are now on the security situation as the polling hours continue.
Authorities are also appealing to residents to remain calm and cooperate with security personnel, urging them to report any suspicious activity in their communities to prevent further escalation of the situation.
