Bovi Ugboma Claims Women Dominate the Nigerian Entertainment Industry

Nigerian stand-up comedian Bovi Ugboma has stirred discussion by asserting that the entertainment industry in Nigeria is largely controlled by women. His remarks were made during a recent appearance on the TVC program “Your View,” where he examined the dynamics of gender representation in the industry.

Bovi pointed out that while women often voice concerns about inequality, they sometimes overlook their significant influence in sectors where they already excel. “Women need to understand that in areas where they are fighting for equality, sometimes, they may have conquered but because they are used to fighting [for equality], they don’t know that they’ve won,” he stated.

Reflecting on the history of the entertainment sector, Bovi emphasized the achievements of women over the past decade. “You talk about the entertainment industry and how it can help women. But I observed 10 or 15 years ago that women actually control the entertainment industry. So what are we talking about?” he questioned.

He cited notable figures such as Funke Akindele and Mo Abudu, who have both achieved significant success at the box office, with Akindele leading as one of the top producers. Ugboma acknowledged other influential women in the industry, including Bolanle Austin-Peters, Jade Osibero, and Kemi Adetiba, all of whom have made substantial contributions to film production and direction.

Bovi also highlighted the success of Chioma Ode, who runs the largest film festival in Nigeria, reinforcing his argument that women are indeed at the forefront of the industry. “So what are you saying?” he challenged, urging a reconsideration of the narrative surrounding women’s roles in entertainment.

Despite acknowledging the challenges faced by young women, particularly regarding exploitation by male producers, he encouraged them to recognize their power. “Yes, it’s true. But who have you cried to? Who have you spoken to? You [women] own the industry,” he remarked, suggesting that women in entertainment should leverage their influence.
