Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga has firmly asserted that President Bola Tinubu is acutely aware of the challenges facing Nigerians, responding to accusations that the President is indifferent to the hardships citizens endure. Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Onanuga addressed the growing discontent surrounding Tinubu’s economic reforms, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to improving the nation’s economic situation.
Onanuga dismissed social media jibes labeling Tinubu as “T-pain,” calling such nicknames mischievous. “President Tinubu feels the pain of Nigerians and assures them that relief is on the horizon,” he stated, reiterating the President’s focus on revitalizing the economy rather than ignoring its struggles.
The spokesperson’s remarks come in the wake of mounting criticism regarding Tinubu’s economic policies, particularly the removal of petrol subsidies and the unification of foreign exchange rates. These measures have led to significant increases in the prices of food, fuel, and other essential goods, sparking frustration among the populace.
Despite the backlash, Onanuga defended the policies, explaining that they are intended to “repair the economy” rather than inflict further hardship. “The President has never shied away from acknowledging that Nigerians are going through difficult times. He is working tirelessly to provide relief and ensure that the nation moves towards a future of prosperity,” he emphasized.
While high inflation and rising living costs remain pressing concerns for many, Onanuga pointed to early signs of economic growth and increased government revenues as evidence of a more favorable outlook. “This is a painful transition, but it’s part of a long-term strategy to stabilize and grow the economy,” he asserted, highlighting the administration’s focus on sustainable development.
