President Tinubu Appoints Major General Olufemi Oluyede as Acting Chief of Army Staff

In a significant military leadership change, President Bola Tinubu has appointed Major General Olufemi Oluyede as the Acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS). This announcement was made on Wednesday by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, following the ongoing medical treatment of the substantive Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja.

According to the statement from Onanuga, “Oluyede will act in the position pending the return of the indisposed substantive Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja.” This decision comes at a crucial time as the Nigerian Army continues to navigate various security challenges across the nation.

Major General Olufemi Oluyede, 56, previously served as the 56th Commander of the elite Infantry Corps of the Nigerian Army, based in Jaji, Kaduna. His appointment reflects both trust in his leadership capabilities and continuity within the military hierarchy.

Oluyede has a long-standing professional relationship with Lagbaja, as both men were commissioned as officers in 1987 from the 39th Regular Course. Notably, Oluyede was promoted to Major General in September 2020, marking a significant milestone in his military career.

His extensive experience encompasses various command roles, beginning as a Platoon Commander and Adjutant at the 65 Battalion. He has held several key positions, including Company Commander at the 177 Guards Battalion and Commandant of the Amphibious Training School.

Throughout his career, Oluyede has participated in several notable military operations, such as the ECOMOG Mission in Liberia and Operation HARMONY IV in Bakassi. He also commanded the 27 Task Force Brigade during Operation HADIN KAI in the Northeast, showcasing his capability in handling complex military engagements.

Oluyede’s contributions to the military have not gone unrecognized; he has received numerous honors, including the Corps Medal of Honour and the Grand Service Star. His accolades also include recognition for excelling in the Staff Course and membership in the National Institute.

As Oluyede steps into this acting role, the Nigerian Army and the nation at large will be watching closely, especially in light of the ongoing security challenges the country faces.
