The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has clarified that President Bola Tinubu has no intention of discriminating against any region, particularly in light of recent power outages in northern Nigeria, which he described as “unfortunate.” Adelabu made these comments on Thursday during a meeting with officials from the Kano State government focused on improving power supply in the region.
“The situation is worrisome and unfortunate. The President does not intend to discriminate against any region,” Adelabu stated, emphasizing that the power outage was not a deliberate act. He added, “What happened was not deliberate but unfortunate. It is not a situation we want to see repeated. If it ever does, we need to have a permanent solution in place.”
During his visit, Adelabu and his team inspected power installations and infrastructure in Kano. He discussed potential collaborations with state officials to address ongoing power supply challenges. The minister urged the state government to invest in power generation and distribution as part of their partnership.
Adelabu also highlighted that the power sector had been decentralized, granting ten states the authority to generate their own power—a capacity that Kano has yet to fully utilize. “There is a need to partner with us in generation and distribution. The Federal Government is ready to collaborate, as there are many uncompleted projects that could otherwise lead to significant losses,” he stated.
In response, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by Chief of Staff Shehu Sagagi, expressed the state government’s commitment to exploring investments in the power sector. He assured the minister that they would consider budgetary provisions to subsidize consumer costs.
