General Yakubu Gowon Reveals Role in Saving Olusegun Obasanjo from Execution in 1995

Former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, has revealed the behind-the-scenes efforts he made to save his predecessor, Olusegun Obasanjo, from execution during General Sani Abacha’s regime in 1995. Gowon shared the story during the maiden Interdenominational Unity Christmas Carol and Praise Festival, an event organized by the Plateau State Government. The festival, aimed at promoting unity and peace in the state, featured Gowon as the Special Guest of Honour and Obasanjo as the Guest of Honour.

In his address, Gowon recounted how he took it upon himself to intervene in the tense situation following Obasanjo’s arrest and subsequent death sentence for his alleged involvement in a coup plot against Abacha’s government. “I wrote a letter to Abacha, pleading with him that God made him a leader to do good and not evil,” Gowon explained, reflecting on his diplomatic efforts to spare Obasanjo’s life.

The letter, which Gowon described as a heartfelt plea for mercy, was not sent through official channels. “I sent my wife to deliver the letter to Abacha in Abuja late at night, urging clemency for Obasanjo,” he revealed, emphasizing the personal and urgent nature of his appeal. His attempt to sway Abacha was rooted in his belief that leadership should be guided by compassion and fairness.

At the time, Obasanjo had been arrested in 1995 and sentenced to death by the military government under Abacha, following accusations of plotting a coup. Obasanjo maintained his innocence throughout the ordeal, and his legal and personal fight for freedom became a high-profile matter. After three years in prison, he was released in 1998, shortly after Abacha’s sudden death, paving the way for Obasanjo’s later ascension to the presidency in 1999.

Reflecting on the events that followed, Gowon expressed satisfaction with the positive turn of events. “I’m glad that soon after, things changed. Not only did Obasanjo leave prison, but he also became our president. This is something that only prayers and sincerity can achieve,” he said, noting that the outcome was a testament to the power of hope and good intentions.

During the Christmas Carol event, both Gowon and Obasanjo took part in a celebration that highlighted unity and peace, despite the ongoing security challenges in Plateau State. Gowon used the opportunity to praise the initiative, calling it a meaningful step toward fostering peace and cooperation among the diverse groups in the region.
