Shehu Sani Reacts to Petrol Price Reduction, Says Nigerians Are ‘Exhausted’

Former senator, Shehu Sani has broken his silence regarding the recent reduction in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol. His comments come after Dangote Refinery announced a price drop from N970 to N899.50 per litre, a move that has drawn mixed reactions across Nigeria.

Dangote Group, through its Group Chief Branding and Communications Officer Anthony Chiejina, explained that the reduction was intended to alleviate transport costs, particularly during the holiday season. Chiejina stated, “The reduction is aimed at alleviating transport costs during this holiday season,” highlighting the refinery’s efforts to provide some relief to the public amid ongoing economic challenges.

However, Shehu Sani’s response to the price change paints a different picture. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the former senator expressed cynicism about the impact of the reduction on ordinary Nigerians. He argued that the price cut, though positive, is insufficient to reverse the broader frustrations that many people are feeling.

“People are so exhausted even if petrol is reduced by N50 they just look and move on,” Sani wrote. His words reflect a sentiment that many Nigerians feel as they grapple with the persistent cost of living increases, high inflation, and the overall economic strain. Sani’s statement suggests that while the reduction is welcome, it may not be enough to alleviate the deep-seated discontent in the country.

Sani’s remarks resonate with many Nigerians who have become disillusioned with frequent price hikes and minimal changes in their daily lives. For a large number of people, even a reduction in petrol prices seems insignificant when weighed against the high cost of food, transport, and other essential goods. The price of petrol, a key factor in transportation costs, directly impacts most aspects of Nigerian life, making such price cuts a mere temporary relief for some.

Despite the price reduction, the economic challenges facing the average Nigerian continue to persist. Analysts have pointed out that, while the reduction may offer temporary relief to motorists, it does little to address the structural issues that have led to the country’s ongoing economic difficulties.

As the holiday season progresses, the effects of this reduction will likely continue to be debated. While some Nigerians may appreciate the cut in petrol prices, others, like Sani, remain skeptical about its real impact.
