Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Labour Party in the 2023 election, has sharply criticized the Nigerian government, claiming that there are more “Yahoo people” in positions of power than outside the system. Obi made this statement during an event in Lagos on Saturday, where he expressed his deep concerns over the state of governance and corruption in the country.
Obi, the former governor of Anambra State, described the situation as dire, stating that both government officials and those outside the system are engaging in criminal activities. “Don’t think when we talk about vices, it is only Yahoo boys,” Obi remarked, drawing attention to the widespread corruption that affects all levels of Nigerian society.
He went further to explain that the problem is not just with internet fraudsters but with those in leadership as well. “There are actually more Yahoo people in government than there are outside because we have turned the entire country into a crime scene where people inside are stealing and people outside are stealing,” Obi added, criticizing the widespread corruption in government.
The former governor’s statements come at a time when many Nigerians are calling for transparency and accountability from their leaders. Corruption has been a long-standing issue in the country, and Obi’s remarks seem to resonate with the growing frustration among citizens who feel the government has failed to address the issue adequately.
Obi also spoke about the importance of strong leadership, emphasizing that good governance is about having “a strong character” and doing what is right even when it’s difficult. He argued that Nigeria’s leadership needs to demonstrate ethical behavior and a commitment to serving the people, rather than perpetuating corrupt practices.
