The Chairman of the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC), Prof. George Chima, was abducted on Friday from his residence in Okigwe, Imo State. Reports indicate that Chima was hosting some lecturers from Abia State University, Uturu, when the gunmen stormed his home and seized him.
According to a family source, the kidnapping occurred while Chima was entertaining his guests. Four armed men, suspected to be kidnappers, entered the house, harassed the visitors, and abducted Chima. The assailants reportedly left with him, leaving behind a chaotic scene.
The police spokesperson in the state, DSP Henry Okoye, confirmed the abduction, stating that the authorities are actively investigating the incident. “Yes, we are aware of the kidnap of the Prof and we have commenced investigations,” Okoye said.
Okoye also provided an update on the police response, mentioning that the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, has taken charge of the situation. “As I speak to you now, the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, personally led the team of police to Okigwe,” he said.
The police are currently on the trail of the kidnappers, working diligently to track down those responsible for the abduction. Okoye reassured the public that efforts are being made to ensure the safe return of Prof. Chima.
