Telecommunications giant MTN Nigeria has issued a public apology to its customers and reversed its controversial 200% tariff hike on its digital bundle plan. The company’s decision comes after backlash from subscribers who were outraged by the sudden increase in data costs.
Earlier in the week, MTN implemented the new pricing structure, significantly raising the cost of its digital data bundles. However, by Thursday, the telecom provider admitted that the adjustment exceeded the 50% tariff increase approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
In an official statement shared via its X (formerly Twitter) account, MTN acknowledged the mistake and sought forgiveness from its customers. “To our 15G digital bundle lovers, you dey vex. We know,” the statement read, acknowledging the frustration of its users.
The company admitted that the price hike had been abrupt and without sufficient communication. “We know how upsetting it must have been to suddenly wake up to a 200 per cent increase on your favorite digital bundle. We could share several reasons and provide explanations, but omo, all that one na story. We don cast,” the statement continued.
In an appeal to its customers, MTN described the move as an oversight, asking users to move past the incident. “We get it and admit it. Let’s just say na mistake. In this love season, don’t stay angry with us. Please forgive and forget. You matter die, and we will never stop showing you how much,” the message concluded.
The initial tariff increase sparked heated reactions online, with many Nigerians accusing the telecom giant of taking advantage of consumers. Some expressed skepticism over MTN’s apology, with a user commenting, “They know Nigerians are easy to exploit. Can they try this in other countries?” Others, however, appreciated the acknowledgment, with another stating, “Hahaha… these guys and Nigerians no go fit part ways… the apology is dope though.”
