Trump Walks Back “Dictator” Remark About Zelensky

Trump

President Donald Trump on Thursday sought to soften his previously harsh remarks referring to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as a “dictator.” His comments, made during a White House press appearance alongside UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, marked a shift in tone from his earlier statement.

A journalist inquired about Trump’s controversial post on his Truth Social platform, in which he had described Zelensky as a dictator. Trump, appearing surprised by the question, responded, “Did I say that? I can’t believe I said that.” The room fell silent after his reply, underscoring the tension surrounding his initial statement.

Trump had previously accused Zelensky of clinging to power by refusing to organize elections, despite his presidential term expiring. “He refuses to have elections, so it’s a dictatorship,” Trump had argued earlier in the week, drawing sharp criticism from Ukrainian and European leaders alike.

Zelensky quickly responded to Trump’s accusations, telling reporters that although Ukraine deeply valued the support of the American people, the former president was “living in a disinformation space.” The Ukrainian leader’s comments highlighted the growing diplomatic tension between the two leaders.

The verbal clash has caused an uproar across Europe, with leaders condemning Trump’s remarks. The rhetoric, which suggested that Ukraine was responsible for instigating the ongoing war with Russia, has drawn widespread backlash, particularly from those who view Zelensky’s leadership as vital in the fight against Russian aggression.

In Europe, the situation has further strained relations, with many calling on Trump to reconsider his stance on Ukraine and its leadership.
