Tinubu Appoints Shamsedeen Ogunjimi as New Accountant General of the Federation

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Shamsedeen Ogunjimi as the new Accountant General of the Federation (AGF). His appointment, announced on Tuesday, will take effect on March 7, 2025, the same day the current AGF, Oluwatoyin Madehin, is set to retire.

Ogunjimi, 57, was initially named as Madehin’s successor in December 2024. His selection was finalized following a competitive process conducted by a special committee tasked with evaluating candidates from the Federal Civil Service. The committee reviewed several Directors of Accounts before arriving at its final decision.

The rigorous selection process involved multiple stages, including a written assessment, an ICT proficiency test, and oral interviews. These measures were put in place to ensure that the appointment was based on merit, competence, and professionalism. The Presidency emphasized that this approach reflected Tinubu’s commitment to transparency and excellence in public sector appointments.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, highlighted the importance of Ogunjimi’s appointment. “The selection process underscores President Tinubu’s commitment to promoting transparency, excellence, and competence in key public service positions,” the statement read.

Ogunjimi’s academic background and professional qualifications further reinforced his suitability for the position. He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Accountancy from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 1990, and later earned a Master’s degree in Accounting and Finance from the University of Lagos.

With a distinguished career spanning decades, Ogunjimi is a fellow of both the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN). His extensive experience in financial management and governance is expected to play a crucial role in his new position.

Congratulating Ogunjimi on his appointment, President Tinubu urged him to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and integrity in his service to the nation. “President Tinubu congratulates Ogunjimi on his appointment and urges him to discharge his duties in the service of Nigeria with integrity, professionalism, and dedication,” Onanuga’s statement noted.
