Nigerian social media users have expressed strong support for actress Bamike Adenibuyan, popularly known as Bambam, following a recent encounter with the Nigerian police. The actress took to social media to recount the incident, highlighting concerns over police conduct and public safety. Her post quickly went viral, sparking discussions about similar experiences among Nigerians.
According to Bambam, the incident occurred after she finished work on a movie set and was heading home with her assistant. They were stopped by police officers in a manner she described as aggressive and forceful. She explained that their approach made her and her assistant uncomfortable, raising concerns about the officers’ intentions.
“Just wrapped up from a movie set, heading home, and Nigerian police stopped us for no reason—forced us to step down only to start begging for money,” she wrote. “What kind of nonsense is this? If we refused, what would they have done?”
Bambam further detailed how the encounter escalated, with one of the officers insisting on financial compensation. “He was a bit inappropriate and forceful. I came down, greeted him, he asked if I was okay, I said I’m fine just tired. He said ‘show me love now,’” she recounted. “He could have asked from the car window, but my assistant and I were down, we couldn’t drive off so I was forced to give something.”
Her post quickly gained traction, with many Nigerians condemning the officers’ behavior. Social media users shared their own experiences of being harassed or extorted by law enforcement, highlighting the growing distrust between citizens and the police. Many called for reforms to address such misconduct.
Bambam emphasized the importance of police professionalism, stating that officers should not make citizens feel unsafe. “We shouldn’t see the police and feel uncomfortable but safe. Asking and demanding are two different things. Feeling entitled about your money and tipping because they were respectful and actually doing their job are two different things,” she added.
