Lagos Police Arraigns Abiola Odutayo Over Death of Bumpa Co-founder

The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arraignment of Abiola Odutayo in connection with the tragic death of 32-year-old Adetunji Opayele, popularly known as Teejay, co-founder of Bumpa. The incident, which occurred on March 4, 2025, along Ozumba Mbadiwe Road in Lagos, has sparked public outrage and calls for justice.

In a statement released on Saturday via X (formerly Twitter), the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, announced that Odutayo was arraigned at Court 1, Tinubu, on March 12, 2025, following her discharge from the hospital. She is facing charges of reckless and careless driving on a public highway, which allegedly resulted in Opayele’s death.

“We acknowledge public concerns regarding the tragic accident that claimed the life of Adetunji Opayele (Teejay) on March 4, 2025. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and all who have been affected by this loss,” the police statement read. It further confirmed, “Following a thorough investigation, Abiola Odutayo was arraigned for driving in a reckless and careless manner, without due care and attention to other road users, causing the death of Opayele.”

According to Hundeyin, the court granted Odutayo bail, and the case has been adjourned until April 16, 2025. The police assured the public of their commitment to transparency, fairness, and justice in handling the case. However, the decision to charge her with reckless driving rather than a more severe offense has fueled criticism from the public.

Eyewitness reports allege that Odutayo failed to yield and refused to assist the critically injured Opayele after the collision, reportedly citing concerns about staining her car. Bystanders reportedly struggled to find medical assistance as several hospitals allegedly refused to treat the victim. These claims have intensified public outrage and demands for stricter legal action.

In response to the incident, over 35,000 Nigerians have signed a petition demanding justice for Opayele. Many petitioners argue that the charge of reckless driving is insufficient and are calling for a manslaughter charge instead.
