The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to 10 #EndBadGovernance protesters who were arrested and detained for treason, among other charges. Justice Emeka Nwite granted the bail in the sum of N10m each and one surety in like sum.
While delivering the ruling, Justice Nwite emphasized that Nigeria’s criminal justice system presumes innocence until proven guilty. He agreed with the defendants’ counsel, Abubakar Marshall, who argued that the protesters should be presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The judge stated, “I have carefully considered the submission of the counsel on both divides. I hereby grant the defendants bail notwithstanding the crime.”
He granted the bail application of all ten defendants, saying, “The bail is hereby granted to the defendants applicant in the sum of N10m each and one surety in like sum.”
This ruling comes as a relief to the protesters who were arrested and detained for exercising their right to peaceful assembly and protest.
