Rabiu Kwankwaso, the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), has signaled his potential readiness to run as Peter Obi’s deputy in the 2027 elections, provided certain conditions are met. In a video that recently gained traction on the social media platform X, Kwankwaso expressed his willingness to explore a partnership with Obi, the leader of the Labour Party (LP), but emphasized the need for mutual trust and respect between the two politicians.
Speaking in Hausa, Kwankwaso outlined his belief that he holds a more prominent political status than Obi, stating, “While I believe I am bigger than Peter Obi politically, as I consider myself his elder brother with a PhD and a proven record of governance, I have no objections to serving as his deputy if the right conditions are set.” Despite this assertion of superiority, Kwankwaso indicated a potential openness to collaboration, suggesting that a strategic alliance could be a possibility if the circumstances are favorable.
In the 2023 elections, Peter Obi earned significant support, especially from the southern and eastern parts of Nigeria, securing victories in 11 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, with over 6.1 million votes. This placed him third overall in the race. Kwankwaso, on the other hand, found solid backing in his home state of Kano, where he dominated the local elections, winning 38 of the state’s 44 local government areas and securing around 1.5 million votes.
Kwankwaso’s comments on a possible alliance with Obi come amid ongoing discussions about the potential for unity among opposition parties ahead of the 2027 presidential election. His willingness to play a supporting role has sparked speculation about how such a partnership could reshape the political landscape in Nigeria.
“We are willing to engage in discussions, provided that trust is established,” Kwankwaso added, emphasizing that any future collaboration would require transparent dialogue. Both political figures, having amassed considerable followings in different regions, could benefit from such an alliance, as they eye the 2027 elections and the opportunity to challenge the current political order.
